Bucky Barnes James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, also known as Winter Soldier and White Wolf, is character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. He is something of a composite character, as the White Wolf is a separate character in the Marvel Comics Universe. History James Buchanan Barnes was born on on March 10, 1917 in Shelbyville, Indiana; the eldest of four siblings. His family moved to New York during the Great Depression, as job prospects had grown thin in the Midwest. In September of 1930, the 13-year-old "Bucky" was walking home from boxing lessons at the Hell's Kitchen YMCA when he noticed a thin, sickly boy getting beaten up by bullies twice his size. Inspired by the kid's misplaced bravery, Bucky stepped in to help. The boy introduced himself as Steve Rogers, an orphan from Brooklyn. The two quickly became friends, as Steve's book smarts perfectly complimented Bucky's street smarts. Bucky in World War II When the United States entered World War II after Pearl Harbor, Barnes and Rogers decided to enlist. While Rogers was deemed 4F due to his medical problems, Barnes easily passed his physical exam and completed basic training, becoming a Sergeant in the 107th Infantry Division. Prior to his first overseas deployment, Barnes visits Rogers, and they attend a Modern Marvels of Tomorrow Exhibit where a young inventor named Howard Stark is demonstrating his experimental propulsion technology. Over the next five month, Sgt. Barnes and the 107th Infantry fight in the European Theater while Rogers undergoes the training and procedures that turn him into the the super-soldier code-named "Captain America". The 107th is captured by the forces of HYDRA, the secretive Axis Powers research division commanded by Lieutenant General Johann Schmidt. Barnes is separated from the other prisoners as Schmidt and his right hand man, Dr. Zola, conduct experiments on him aimed at enhancing soldiers. When Rogers discovers that Barnes is missing and no rescue operation is being planned, he decides to enact his own rescue as Captain America, outfitted with weapons and armor modified by Stark, including a vibranium shield. Rogers liberates the prisoners, who quickly learn how to use the advanced HYDRA weaponry and form an elite unit, the Howling Commandos. Over the next two years, the Howling Commandos perform several successful operations against HYDRA. However, during an attempt to capture Zola, Barnes was shot and fell to his apparent death. However, Zola's experiments on him when he was a prisoner enabled him to survive these normally fatal injuries, albeit barely. HYDRA scientists restored what they could of his body, replacing his unsalvageable left arm with a cybernetic limb made of a titanium alloy. HYDRA's new leadership had infiltrated the CIA, and the KGB - thus secretly running both sides of the Cold War. Barnes was given over to the KGB, who brainwashed him into being an assassin code-named the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier would be deployed for covert assassination missions and placed in suspended animation at HYDRA's Siberian base until his next mission. This slowed his aging, and also made him something of a "ghost story" among spies, assassins, and mercenaries. One of the Winter Soldier's earliest missions was in 1951, during the Korean War, where he fought a Super Soldier test subject, Isaiah Bradley. The Winter Soldier suffered serious injuries in this fight and barely escaped with his life. In 1991, Howard Stark had been working on a new Super Soldier serum. The Winter Soldier was reawakened by Colonel Vasily Karpov to assassinate Stark and his wife, Maria, and steal his research. Howard's last moment was the confused reaction of noting his killer's resemblance to Sgt. Barnes, still looking as youthful as he did during the '40s. Karpov attempted to create other super soldiers who could be used similar to the Winter Soldier, but they proved unstable; Barnes had to evacuate Karpov and place the failed candidates in suspended animation. The Winter Soldier was next reawakened in 2009, to assassinate a Nigerian scientist under the protection of Black Widow. Barnes completed his assignment by shooting through the Black Widow when she tried to shield her target. Romanoff herself survived, with a small scar on her hip to remind her of the encounter. The Winter Soldier The Winter Soldier's next deployment was two years after Captain America had been awakened from his own suspended animation. Colonel Nick Fury had begun to suspect that had been infiltrated by rogue elements, and expressed this concern to one of his senior agents, Alexander Pierce. Pierce was in on the plot, so he ordered the Winter Soldier to assassinate Fury. Fury narrowly escaped the first attempted, but the Winter Soldier was able to track him down again and critically injure him. Before he could finish off the Colonel, he was fought off by Captain America, who forced him to retreat. As Captain America, Black Widow, and their newest allies Sam "Falcon" Wilson and Agent 13 were branded fugitives by the conspiracy, the Winter Soldier was ordered to hunt them down. Cap recognized his old friend and sought to redeem him, while Barnes gradually began to remember his old life. Things came to a head when Pierce showed his hand, officially launching an uprising where several HYDRA controlled military and government agents launched a massive attack on Washington DC. During the battle, the Winter Soldier finally broke free of his conditioning and saved Cap from falling into the Potomac. The Battle of Washington ended with the defeat of the conspirators, with Pierce killed and several HYDRA infiltrators exposed and arrested, but the Winter Soldier escaped. He regained his old memories after visiting the Hall of Valor exhibit, which contained a monument to himself and his squadmates in the Howling Commandos. Anticipating that he will be hunted by people on both sides of the law, some of whom might want him dead, he spends the next two years living off the grid in Romania. Although Captain America had hoped to quietly track down Barnes and restore his sanity, he soon found himself with bigger fish to fry. operative Deathlok had been tracking a HYDRA scientist, Dr. List, but found a larger HYDRA cell that the Avengers were called on to take down. And a rogue AI had attacked the European nation of Sokovia, causing massive collateral damage before the Avengers destroyed it. The death and destruction caused many to champion further government oversight among super-powered operatives, a move opposed by Cap but supported by Howard Stark's son Tony, who had become the armored superhero Iron Man. This leads to a UN conference in Vienna to discuss what form the proposed "Sokovia Accords" will take. This conference is disrupted by a terrorist bombing that kills many of the dignitaries, including King T'Chaka of Wakanda. T'Chaka's son, Prince T'Challa, secretly Wakanda's superhero champion Black Panther, vows to hunt down the guilty party and exact vengeance. Security footage implicates the Winter Soldier as the bomber. Suspecting that Barnes is being framed, Cap calls in some favors and tracks him down in Bucharest. Black Panther follows him and attacks the Winter Soldier, resulting in a massive free for all that spills into the streets until Cap and the Winter Soldier are arrested by War Machine and brought to a high security facility in Berlin. While Stark admonishes Rogers on the laws he has broken, the real bomber infiltrates the facility disguised as Dr. Theodore Broussard, a psychiatrist assigned to profile Barnes. Broussard recites a code that triggers a secret mental program within the Winter Soldier, and he breaks free of his restraints and goes on a rampage. Cap and Falcon eventually track him down, and suspect that Broussard is seeking the location of the Siberian facility where the other Winter Soldiers are being held. Seeking the aid of Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man, they head to an airport in Leipzig, but are intercepted by Iron Man, War Machine, Vision, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Black Widow. A pitched battle between the factions ensues, with Iron Man's team gaining the upper hand until Cap's switch to a holding action to buy time for Rogers and Barnes to escape. Iron Man has the rebellious heroes locked up in The Raft, then receives a report of the real Dr. Broussard being found dead in his hotel room, which finally convinces him of the Winter Soldier's innocence. Once Captain America, Winter Soldier, and Iron Man arrive at the Siberian facility, finding all the other Winter Soldiers dead, the impostor identifies himself as Colonel Helmut Zemo. His family was killed in the Sokovia Incident, and he blamed the Avengers. As a normal human, he had no chance of destroying them by force, but he could drive them apart from within. He reveals his hidden trump card... a video that reveals that the Winter Soldier killed Iron Man's parents. Iron Man attacks the Winter Soldier in a rage, and Cap instinctively moves in to protect his friend. Iron Man destroys the Winter Soldier's cybernetic arm with his Uni-Beam, before Cap incapacitates him with his shield. Recognizing that the shield belongs to Iron Man, as his father made it, he leaves it behind as he and Barnes depart. With Barnes officially exonerated, Black Panther offers them sanctuary in Wakanda, where his sister, Shuri, removes the remaining HYDRA programming. When Thanos arrives on Earth seeking to recover the remaining Infinity Stones and bring his view of "balance" to the galaxy, Barnes is called back into service. Black Panther equips him with a vibranium arm and dubs him "the White Wolf." The White Wolf joins the Avengers in the Battle of Wakanda, but is one of those "blipped" out of existence when Thanos acquires the stones. He is restored to existence five years later, after Thanos is defeated. Barnes is there to witness Rogers bequeathe the shield and mantle of Captain America to Falcon. However, Falcon decides to donate the shield to the Smithsonian, under the belief that Captain America represents a moral high ground that nobody, not even him, can live up to at the current moment. This disappoints Barnes, as he feels this means that Cap had misjudged Sam. If he was wrong about Wilson being ready to inherit his legacy, perhaps he was wrong about Barnes deserving a chance at redemption. Though he had received a Presidential Pardon for his role in the Battle of Wakanda, and the final battle against Thanos, it was contingent on attending regular court-mandated therapy sessions. Barnes had been haunted by nightmares of his crimes he committed during his tenure in HYDRA, and had been compiling a list of those he wronged, hoping to atone for these actions individually. Barnes and Wilson have a tense reunion after the US Government announces a new Captain America John Walker. Neither man believes Walker is worthy of inheriting the shield, but Barnes reminds Wilson that this all would have been a moot point if Sam had accepted the shield in the first place. Despite their tensions, the two agree to work together to pursue the Flag Smashers, a team of anarchists that have begun undertaking increasingly violent acts of terrorism. When it becomes clear that the Flag Smashers are using an old version of HYDRA's Super Soldier serum, Barnes decides they must seek the aid of a man who has spent much of his life trying to destroy it their old adversary Zemo. Sam Wilson Sam Wilson aka the Falcon, is a is character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. History Samuel Thomas Wilson was born in Delacroix, Louisiana, to Paul and Darlene Wilson, who operated a fishing business. The oldest of two siblings, he also had a younger sister, Sarah. When their parents died, Sarah inherited the family business while Sam joined the Air Force. Sam eventually becomes a pararescue jumper for the 58th Rescue Squadron, which sees action in Afghanistan. The 58th find themselves at a considerable disadvantage, as Taliban snipers are able to easily hide in the mountainous terrain and shoot down approaching EVAC choppers with RPG-7s. Tony Stark proposed his own solution in the form of the Exo-7 Falcon flight harness. Designed to be operated by one person, it could support the weight of two just long enough to get a wounded soldier to safety. Under Stark's reasoning, the operators of the harness would be too small and fast for the rocket snipers to target especially if they were operating under the cover of darkness. Sam performed several successful rescue operations using an Exo-7 prototype, but after his wingman was shot down he felt he could no longer continue. He retired from active service and moved to Washington DC, where he became a trauma counselor. Two years after the Battle of New York, Sam is going for a morning run through the streets of DC when he meets Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, who is running the same route and outpacing Sam by a considerable margin. Steve and Sam quickly become friends as they share their experiences as veterans of the Armed Forces. Later that week, Captain America and Black Widow discover has compromised along with the CIA and FBI, and it is effectively impossible for them to determine who amongst their usual contacts is corrupt and who isn't. Cap puts Sam's name forth as someone they can trust. Sam agrees to help after his mothballed flight harness is returned to him. He helps them capture and interrogate a corrupt agent, Jasper Sitwell, who gives up some information before being assassinated by the conspiracy's primary catspaw, the Winter Soldier. The three of them barely escape the cyborg assassin, but not before Cap recognizes him as his old World War II buddy, James "Bucky" Barnes. The HYDRA conspirators eventually initiate their endgame A coup attempt which resulted in a massive attack on Washington DC. Sam, as Falcon, acquitted himself well during this battle, fighting his way to the Commander of the HYDRA Strike Team, Brock Rumlow, and defeating him in a one on one duel. Sam's flight harness suffered irreparable damage in the battle, but Stark replaced it with an armored wingsuit that included a reconnaissance drone, which Sam dubbed Redwing. He agreed to help Cap track down Barnes and restore his sanity. Cap reteamed with the Avengers when a HYDRA cell that Deathlok had been tracking proved to be far more heavily fortified than previously thought. Sam arrives at the Avengers Mansion as a guest for a party thrown not only to celebrate the victory. Cap invites Sam to joins the Avengers, but he declines - he would prefer to focus on pursuing Barnes and Rumlow, who had escaped custody and resurfaced as the masked terrorist Crossbones. Sam ultimately does agree to join after Battle of Sokovia, alongside War Machine, Scarlet Witch, and Vision - replacing Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye, who had taken sabbaticals for various personal reasons. Falcon faces his first super-powered opponent when the security systems at the Avengers Mansion detect some anomalous readings. When he investigated, he found a man in a suit of insectoid themed armor attempting to sneak into the mansion. The thief, calling himself Ant-Man, managed to fight off the Falcon, largely due to Sam being caught completely off guard by his opponent's size shifting abilities. Frustrated at being beaten by an opponent whose powers defied everything he knew about human physics, Falcon now found himself pursuing three fugitives, though he did not tell his fellow Avengers about the Ant-Man. A few months later, Crossbones was sighted in Lagos, Nigeria, running with terrorists attempting to secure a biological weapon. As their individual attempts to capture him over the past six months had failed, Captain America and Falcon bring Black Widow and Scarlet Witch as reinforcements. After being cornered and overpowered by Captain America, Crossbones detonates the explosives in his belt. Scarlet Witch attempts to use her telekinetic powers to divert the explosion to the top floor of an abandoned building, but the yield is so powerful that construction workers renovating the neighboring property are killed. The Avengers assist the fire and relief teams. After returning to the mansion, the Avengers receive a visit from Stark and Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross. Ross explains that the Lagos Incident, coupled with the Battle of Sokovia six months earlier, has sparked a huge public demand for heavier regulation of the role of super-powered individuals in combat. A United Nations conference, the Sokovia Accords, will be held to discuss what those regulations would entail. Cap and Falcon are leery of these regulations, noting the unfortunate implications they entail. However, most of their teammates suggest further oversight. The Sokovia Accords are bombed in an act of terrorism that appears to have been orchestrated by the Winter Soldier. Cap suggests that Barnes has been framed, and Falcon is among the first to believe him. They track Barnes to Romania, but they are attacked by Black Panther. The fight spills into the street, where they are arrested by War Machine for violating the Sokovian Accords. While en route to the Joint Counter Terrorism Center in Berlin, Falcon asked the Black Panther if he liked cats. Black Panther explains that the mantle of Black Panther is passed down from one Wakandan king to the next Since his father was killed in the bombing, he is the new king. When the real bomber sabotages the facility and enables Barnes to escape, Falcon tells Cap about Ant-Man and suggests he might be able to help. T'Challa T'Challa is the King of Wakanda and first son of T'Chaka and Ramonda. As the Wakandan monarch, he became the holder of the Black Panther mantle. Following the death of his father in the bombing attack orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, T'Challa had set out to kill the Winter Soldier, who was widely believed to be responsible for the attack. During his attempt to find the Winter Soldier, Black Panther had joined a Civil War between the Avengers, where he sided with Iron Man. However, Black Panther eventually learned that Zemo was really the one who had been responsible for his father's demise, as he captured Zemo, handing him over to Everett Ross, while he also vowed never to allow desires of vengeance to consume him again. Upon returning into Wakanda, T'Challa was officially crowned King, before he attempted to track down Ulysses Klaue, who had resurfaced after several years. However, T'Challa failed to capture Klaue and instead was forced to bring Everett Ross to the city to save his life. T'Challa's leadership was challenged when Erik Killmonger came into Wakanda, having killed Klaue and challenged T'Challa for their throne, as Killmonger bested T'Challa in a duel and took the crown. However, T'Challa had survived the duel and, with the help of M'Baku and his family, returned to Wakanda where he defeated Killmonger. Following the conflict, T'Challa returned to the United Nations as he had shared Wakanda's secret wealth with the rest of the world. Black Panther was then called upon by the Avengers, as they had uncovered Thanos plan to claim all six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of all life in the universe. T'Challa agreed to allow the Avengers to keep Vision in the city, where Shuri could remove the Mind Stone. However, Wakanda was then invaded by Thanos' forces, as Black Panther had led his army against Thanos and the Black Order, only for them to be overpowered as Thanos completed his goal and then wiped out half of life, killing Black Panther as a result. However, Black Panther was resurrected five years later by Hulk, as he then joined the Avengers in a final battle against Thanos, finally defeating the Mad Titan, although Tony Stark sacrificed his life for victory. Carol Danvers Okoye "I am loyal to that throne. No matter who sits upon it." ―Okoye Okoye is the General of the Dora Milaje and the head of Wakandan armed forces and intel. Witnessing T'Challa's coronation, she joins him in tracking down Ulysses Klaue. After Erik Killmonger overthrew T'Challa, Okoye found herself conflicted between her friendship with T'Challa, or her duty to her new king. T'Challa soon returned and Okoye soon joined him in the fight against Killmonger and successfully taking back the throne. When Thanos and his forces arrived on Earth to forcefully take the Mind Stone from Vision, Okoye soon was forced to defend Wakanda alongside her king and the Avengers. Although they succeeded in killing Thanos' forces when Thanos himself came on Wakanda, Okoye and the other heroes were completely overpowered and unable to stop him from completing the Infinity Gauntlet, though Okoye remained one of the survivors. In the wake of the Snap, she joined the Avengers, serving under the command of Natasha Romanoff whilst simultaneously leading the Dora Milaje in Wakanda. After the Blip in 2023, which resurrected all the lives claimed by Thanos' snap, she joined T'Challa and the Wakandans to provide aid for the Avengers during the Battle of Earth, mortally wounding Corvus Glaive. Following the aftermath of the battle, with the Avengers now defunct, she returned to Wakanda and resumed serving T'Challa. Red Skull The Red Skull is a character appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. He is the "Big Bad" of Captain America The First Avenger, where he is played by Hugo Weaving, and also has cameos in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, where he is played by Ross Marquand. History Dr. Johann Schmidt was born in Germany to Hermann and Marta Schmidt, likely between 1896 and 1900. Much of his early history is unknown, but he developed a fascination with Norse mythology at an early age, and by 1930 he was a Professor at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. Dr. Schmidt foresaw the rise of the Nazi party and allied with them, it seemed that Hitler shared his passion for Norse folklore. But this alliance was only a means to an end - his true loyalties lie with a secretive, ancient order known as HYDRA. Schmidt was recruited into the SS in 1934, advancing to the rank of Lieutenant General. One of his first assignments was to hunt one of his former colleagues from FWU Professor Abraham Erskine. Professor Erskine had made some groundbreaking research on genetic engineering and was rumored to have been working on a serum that could enhance human strength and endurance to superhuman levels. But he had no interest in giving this formula over to the Nazis. Neither, it turned out, did Schmidt; he sought the formula for himself. After forcing Erskine to finish the formula, he took a sample of it himself. It granted Schmidt superhuman strength, but it came at a terrible cost He would lose his hair, his skin became deep red, and his facial features deformed to the point they resembled a demonic skull. After defecting to the United States, Erskine would suggest the serum did not actually disfigure Schmidt... it simply brought his true self out "Good becomes great, bad becomes worse." General Schmidt, pre-disfigurement Schmidt hid his disfigurement under a lifelike mask that resembled his original face, and was placed in charge of his own weapons research division, which he named HYDRA, after his secretive order, with a fortress in the Alps. On some level, Schmidt realized this was an exile, as his grotesque visage meant he no longer met the Führer's "standards of physical perfection". He became obsessed with finding the Space Stone, which he knew as the Tesseract, as he had learned that Odin had hidden it on Earth centuries ago. In 1942, he finds it in a monastery in Tønsberg, Norway and brings it back to his base. He has a Swiss bio-physicist, Dr. Arnim Zola, analyze it, and they are able to use the Tesseract to power several high tech weapons. He shows several of these weapons to impatient SS inspectors who are eager to see results, then kills them when they see that he intends to target Berlin when the Allies are defeated. He learns that Erskine is working on a new version of the Super Soldier Serum with the Americans called Operation Rebirth. He sends an assassin, Agent Kruger, to sabotage the project. Kruger assassinates Erskine, but not before injecting the serum into one successful test subject, a "kid from Brooklyn" named Steve Rogers. Red Skull in World War II In 1943, a HYDRA base in Italy is discovered by the 107th Infantry Division, led by Sgt. James Barnes. The HYDRA forces, armed with superior weaponry, defeat them and Barnes is captured. Rogers, now wearing an experimental suit of armor designed by Howard Stark and operating under the name Captain America, leads a team to rescue Barnes, where he encounters Schmidt for the first time. Schmidt reveals his true Red Skull visage and taunts Rogers, before setting the base on self-destruct and making his escape. At this point he appeared to stop masquerading as a normal human and began openly operating as the Red Skull. For the next two years, Captain America would become a persistent thorn in the Red Skull's side, as he would locate and shut down several HYDRA bases. By 1945, the Red Skull was prepared to initiated his endgame, Project Valkyrie, a devastating aerial attack against the United States. Captain America fought his way to the Red Skull's plane and the two had their final showdown. During the confrontation, the Skull attempts to draw upon the power of the Space Stone, but ends up disintegrated by its power. Cap, and the rest of the world, presumed him to be dead. But in truth, the Red Skull was teleported to the distant world of Vormir, where he became the guardian of the Soul Stone. Since the Soul Stone could only be attained by someone who was willing to sacrifice someone who was dear to them, a sociopath like Schmidt had no hope of claiming its power and hence was its perfect guardian. Now an omniscient, wraith like figure, he found some small amusement in seeing people trying and failing to claim the stone. Eventually, "Thanos, Son of A'Lars" arrived on Vormir, and the Skull saw him succeed where others failed, sacrificing his daughter Gamora and claiming the stone. After the Avengers defeated Thanos, Captain America would encounter the Red Skull one last time when he returned the Soul Stone to its original resting place. Whether the Skull was able to recognize his old nemesis is not entirely clear. Powers and Abilities As a result of Professor Erskine's super soldier serum, the Red Skull possessed superhuman strength, endurance, and durability. His reflexes were similarly enhanced, giving him cat-like agility. His punches could dent steel, and he could run at a foot speed of 25 miles per hour over short distances. He had a genius level intellect, which was also enhanced by the serum. He was a highly skilled marksman, favoring his sidearm in combat situations. As the Stone Keeper, the Red Skull had ironically acquired the immortality he sought while he was on Earth, at the cost of becoming a wraith-like figure that was, arguably, no longer human. In seventy years, the only signs of aging he had was his skin being a bit paler, and this could be attributed to the darker atmosphere of Vormir, which was on a fixed orbit that permanently blocked light from its sun. He also had a degree of omniscience, able to instantly deduce the identities of those who came to Vormir seeking the Stone, and who they were descended from. Black Widow is particularly surprised when he refers to her as "Natasha, daughter of Ivan" as she did not even know her father's name prior to that point. Quotes "Tomorrow HYDRA shall stand master of the world, borne to victory on the wings of the Valkyrie. Our enemies' weapons will be powerless against us. If they shoot down one plane, hundreds more shall rain fire upon them! If they cut off one head... Two more shall take its place! Hail HYDRA!" ―Captain America The First Avenger "My weapons contain enough destructive power to decimate every hostile capital on Earth. Quite simply, gentlemen, I have harnessed the power of the gods." ―Captain America The First Avenger "You could have the power of the gods! Yet you wear a flag on your chest and think you fight a battle of nations! I have seen the future, Captain! There are no flags!" ―The Red Skull gives Cap the obligatory "Join the Dark Side" speech "A lifetime ago, I too sought the stones... I even held one in my hand. But it cast me out, banished me here, guiding others to a treasure I cannot possess." ―Avengers Infinity War 1JyapjB.
